2009 BJCP Class 5

Post by donniestyle »

My apologies to everyone if you looked for this information here before the class. I did not get it posted, although I did send it to everyone on the mailing list. Here it is for reference.

Guys,

The 5th BJCP Class will be held on Sunday September 27, at the home of Chuck Homola. The address is 905 Glen Rose Dr, Allen, TX 75013. Here's a map.

I've gotten some emails from some letting me know they are unable to continue attending the classes. Thank you for letting me know. I will continue sending you these notices (unless you object) with the hope you may be able to come to some classes, and you may possibly take the BJCP exam. If you do not wish to continue receiving these emails, please respond and let me know.

Our 5th session will be a mini BJCP Exam. It will contain 2-3 questions from the BJCP study guide, and will be from the following topics.

Brewing Water Chemistry
Troubleshooting Off Flavors
Malts, and Adjuncts
Wort Production

Look at the BJCP Exam Study Guide exam questions related to the above topics at this link.

Additionally the exam will include beer to judge. One or two types of beer will be provided to judge, per the BJCP Exam requirements. They could be any of categories 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, or 15. They may be either commercial or home brewed examples.

Remember, this is not as much to test your knowledge, as to help you learn how to take the BJCP exam. Time management is important. It is important to judge the beer as soon as you receive it, and to do that very quickly (10 minutes or less). Try to spend no more than 10-12 minutes on each question. If you find yourself unable to write much on a question, move on to the next, and come back to it later.

The commercial beer styles presentations will be given on the following styles.

Category 5, Bock, presented by Scott Townson, supplied by Einar Jonsson.

Category 10, American Ale, presented by James Dorman, supplied by Jimmy Orkin.

I notice that our attendance has been waning. I'm hopeful that some are not intimidated by the mini exams. I'm hoping for a bug turnout this time and in the future. I'll be taking the exam also, although I know the questions and I have to formulate a good answer beforehand, I'll be running on batteries also.

Remember, this is the day after the club Oktoberfest party. Moving this class up one week will buy us more flexibility later. I think it will be more difficult to schedule around the holidays.

See you on September 27.
