Re: National Homebrew Competition Strategy?
Thanks Jimmy. I understand that the goal of the first round is getting to the second round and I used to think that they were shipping elsewhere because certain locations were filled up. After seeing data from another year and also seeing how no one from our club had trouble getting entries into the...

National Homebrew Competition Strategy?
I've been watching the National Homebrew Competition results for the last 2 or 3 years and I noticed something. For the 1st round, the guys from Austin don't tend to drop off their entries in Austin. Instead they pay to ship them somewhere else. Why would someone do want to pay more than they have t...

Here is a video that demonstrates the racking cane and stopper approach:

Re: Pressure fillers
I also have a Blichmann Beer Gun and I am happy with it. However, sometimes I don't feel like setting it up and cleaning it so instead, I resort to the ol' broken racking cane and stopper trick: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=24678 It's cheap and it works well. I've used both methods f...

NTHBA Made a Move This Year
In the Lone Star Circuit, our club didn't win this year but we were the most improved of the big hitters. Of the top 4 clubs, we were the only one to receive more points this year compared to last year. We actually improved by 42 points. That's pretty impressive considering that the other clubs went...

Re: Water conditioning/additions?
I'm late to the party on this thread. You guys that use 5.2 (Walter and Bill), have you ever checked the pH of your mash with a meter after adding 5.2?
Also, is that all you guys use for water treatment for lighter colored beers?

I'm not sure I know what you mean. Are you saying that it looks like others did the ol' double entry trick?

Re: Delayed Diacetyl
Bill, Regarding your comment on not being set up for cold weather brewing, I struggle with that issue as well. If you are fermenting in a refrigerator or other small, enclosed box that can only cool and not heat I have a tip. I have a fermentation refrigerator in the garage. When the weather drops b...

Re: Delayed Diacetyl
I won't pretend to be an expert on this but I've found that most of my beer comes out better if I keep it on the yeast for 4 weeks (with a couple of exceptions). I just like giving the yeast plenty of time to clean things up. Here is an excerpt from an article I found online that might explain what ...

Re: Dixie Cup
Ryan,
I know that at the club meeting Einar said that he was planning to drive our club entries to Houston. If I remember correctly, he said that he was driving there on Sept. 21.
